The United Way of Elgin’s Board of Directors gained two new members in October and three new members in November.  Read below to find out a little bit about each new board member:

Judy Cabrera, Community Representative: Judy, a retired bilingual diagnostician for the U-46 School District, is beginning her second tenure on the United Way Board.  In 1997, Judy helped initiate Youth United, a youth service group whose aim is to foster leadership development and charitable service in high school students.  She is still involved with the group today, and continues to provide insight and guidance for the student members.

Betsy Cappas, Community Representative: Betsy has resided in Elgin for 20 years.  In addition to being an active volunteer with School District 301 and a member of the Fideliter Club of Elgin, she also serves in several capacities at her church. She is a past member of the Elgin Junior Service Board, Elgin Enrichment Series, and has held numerous volunteer roles at her children’s school.  Betsy is looking forward to embarking on this new volunteer experience as part of the Board.

Sue Ehlers, Chase Card Services: A 19-year veteran of Chase, Sue began in the Corporate Audit department in Chicago.  In her current role as the Vice President of Customer and Risk Operations, she manages the Issue & Performance Team, ensuring that Chase is mitigating their operational risks.  Sue is the chair of the Hillcrest School Business Partnership and is an active member of the Elgin chapter of the Women’s Leadership Network.

Cherie Murphy, City of Elgin: Cherie currently serves as the Marketing Officer for the City of Elgin.  She has worked for the City for 10 years and served in several different capacities, including community outreach and neighborhood affairs.  She has been a member of the United Way Vision Council since its inception and served as a co-chair of the Neighborhood Impact council for two years.

Jennifer Rakow, IHC Construction Companies: Born and raised in Elgin, Jennifer left to pursue her BA at Boston University. This led to a decade of living & working overseas in Switzerland and Italy, where she became proficient in French, Italian, and Spanish.  She recently returned to Elgin and is proud to follow in the footsteps of her lifetime director-father Tom Rakow in serving on the United Way of Elgin board.

The Board looks forward to continuing in the mission of the United Way of Elgin, which is “Building Community, Improving Lives, and Making Every Contribution Count.”  The new board members will certainly help strengthen the Board for the future.
